Horse Camps

Cevalo's day camp program introduces young riders to the joy of working with horses. Campers learn basic horsemanship and riding skills through a series of hands-on activities and games.

In addition to Cevalo's popular summer camp program, special holiday camps are held during Winter and Spring break.

2008 Summer Camps

The 2008 Camp Schedule includes:

  • Seven 5-day sessions for children 8 and up. $360/session. No experience necessary, riders with previous experience welcome.
  • Two 3-day mini-camp sessions for 6 and 7 year olds. $195/session.
  • Two 5-day intermediate sessions for children 11 and up who have previous camp or lesson experience. $360/session.
  • One 5-day jump camp for current Cevalo students, adults welcome (requires instructor approval). $360/session.

Sessions are normally limited to 6 riders and are staffed by an instructor, counselor, and one or more student assistants. (We can accommodate up to 8 riders for the intermediate sessions. Jump camp is taught by our head instructor and enrollment is at her discretion.)

For the regular and intermediate sessions, campers are matched with an appropriate school horse who is "theirs" for the entire session. We limit the number of participants so that they don't have to share horses and everyone receives one-on-one attention from our camp instructor and other counselors. The daily lesson and activities are tailored to suit each camper's experience and ability. Campers ride one hour each day, are taught how to groom and tack their own horses, and learn other basic horsemanship skills through a series of demonstrations and hands-on activities that might include longeing/loose schooling a horse in the round pen, join-up, feeding the horses, mucking out stalls, cleaning tack, and bathing a horse. On the last day, campers have the opportunity to demonstrate their newly-learned skills in a mini-show for their family and friends.

The mini-camps provide an introduction to basic horsemanship and riding for 6 and 7 year olds. Lessons are conducted on a lead-line and the focus is on learning how to control your own body so you can steer and control your mount. Cevalo staff helps with the grooming and tacking and, as always, activities are tailored to the campers' abilities.
